Online Roulette in Canada: Rules, Bets and Payouts
Roulette is a game of predicting where a ball will finish on a numbered wheel. You can cover one number, a small group or a broader category such as red. The wheel, payout schedule and treatment of zero determine the odds; the recent results do not tell you what must happen next.
This guide explains online roulette for Canadian players, from ordinary bets and payouts to European, American and French rules. It also covers live tables, mobile controls, Canadian-dollar accounts and bonus restrictions. Read the rules for the exact game, especially when multipliers or extra features change the standard payouts.
How an online roulette round works
The betting layout represents the wheel’s numbers and groups of numbers. Inside bets cover specific numbers or adjoining positions on the grid; outside bets cover categories such as colours, dozens and columns. OLG PlaySmart’s introduction explains the basic layout and round sequence.
- Check the wheel type, payout schedule and table limits.
- Choose a chip value and place it on the intended betting area.
- Read the total stake and confirm which numbers each chip covers.
- Submit the round or wait for the live table’s betting period to close.
- Compare the result with every accepted bet and review the credited return.
On a live table, the countdown and “no more bets” announcement close the betting window. A tap near the deadline may not be accepted. Check the recorded wager instead of assuming that an animation or highlighted chip confirms acceptance.
Add up the complete layout
Three C$1 straight-up bets and C$2 on red commit C$5 to that spin. The selected chip value alone does not show your exposure. Repeating that unchanged layout for twenty spins means C$100 in total wagers, even if some winnings are reused.
“Repeat” can restore an entire previous layout. Use a demonstration where available to learn undo, clear and repeat controls before considering paid play. Closing the game should not be assumed to cancel an accepted bet.
European, American and French roulette
- European: the conventional single-zero wheel has 37 pockets, numbered 1–36 plus 0.
- American: the conventional double-zero wheel has 38 pockets, numbered 1–36 plus 0 and 00.
- French: normally single-zero roulette with additional rules for eligible even-money bets. Confirm whether la partage or en prison applies.
- Triple-zero: a 39-pocket version includes a third zero or equivalent extra pocket. It changes the probabilities again.
The Wizard of Odds roulette reference describes these formats. Inspect the actual wheel and rules rather than relying on a name or a French-looking betting layout.
In conventional play, zero is not covered by red/black, odd/even, low/high, dozens or columns. Double zero is a separate pocket, not another name for zero. Special zero rules must be explicitly stated.
A useful first check is to count the pockets, then read what a single-number win pays. One fewer losing pocket improves the probability of hitting a chosen number, but a reduced payout can offset that advantage.
Common roulette bets and payouts
The following are conventional profit payouts, also described in OLG PlaySmart’s bet guide. They exclude the returned winning stake and do not replace a special variant’s paytable.
| Bet | Numbers | Profit |
|---|---|---|
| Straight up | 1 | 35:1 |
| Split | 2 | 17:1 |
| Street | 3 | 11:1 |
| Corner | 4 | 8:1 |
| Six line | 6 | 5:1 |
| Dozen or column | 12 | 2:1 |
| Red/black, odd/even, low/high | 18 | 1:1 |
| American top line | 0, 00, 1, 2, 3 | 6:1 |
A winning C$2 straight-up bet at 35:1 earns C$70 profit and returns C$72 including the stake. A winning C$5 dozen bet at 2:1 earns C$10 profit and returns C$15. Other losing bets on the layout must still be deducted when calculating the complete round’s result.
Grid adjacency matters for splits and corners. Numbers next to each other around the physical wheel are not necessarily adjacent on the betting grid. A neighbours or racetrack control can place several separate bets, so inspect its complete cost.
Win probability, house edge and RTP
For a fair wheel with equally likely pockets, divide the number of covered pockets by the total. A single number on a single-zero wheel wins with probability 1/37, about 2.70%. Red covers eighteen pockets, so its chance is 18/37, about 48.65%, not 50%.
On a double-zero wheel, those probabilities become 1/38, about 2.63%, and 18/38, about 47.37%. A more frequent win does not automatically mean a better average return: the payout also matters.
Calculating the conventional return
A standard winning single-number bet returns 36 times the stake including that stake. With 37 equally likely pockets, its theoretical RTP is 36/37, or approximately 97.30%; the house edge is 1/37, or 2.70%. Standard red/black at 1:1 has the same return because 18 × 2/37 gives the same result.
Using those standard payouts, ordinary double-zero bets have a 5.26% edge, and ordinary triple-zero bets have a 7.69% edge. The American five-number top line is an exception: five winning pockets returning seven times the stake on a 38-pocket wheel produce a 7.89% edge.
These calculations assume no additional rules, reduced payouts or features. A C$1,000 turnover at a 2.70% edge corresponds to roughly C$27 of theoretical expected loss over extensive play. It does not predict a particular session or promise a refund of 97.30% of your deposit.
La partage and en prison
With la partage on a single-zero wheel, an eligible even-money bet loses half its stake when zero lands. A C$10 red bet therefore returns C$5 on zero. The resulting edge is 1/74, about 1.35%; it does not apply to straight-up bets or dozens.
En prison can hold an eligible stake after zero. A subsequent qualifying win releases that held stake without profit. The treatment of another zero varies, so do not assign every en-prison game the same percentage. Check the table’s complete rule before comparing it with la partage.
Multiplier roulette needs its own paytable
A feature game may use a familiar wheel while changing payouts. Evolution’s Lightning Roulette description states that non-multiplied straight-up wins pay 29:1, while selected lucky numbers can receive enhanced payouts. Its ordinary split, corner, colour and dozen payouts remain standard.
That reduced base payout means you cannot calculate the complete straight-up RTP from the pocket count alone. You also need the probabilities and values of the feature payouts. Do not treat the largest advertised multiplier as the expected return.
Similarly, extra balls, side bets and optional feature charges can alter exposure. Check whether an advertised multiplier includes the original stake, which bets qualify and whether extra features cost more. A software provider’s product page does not establish availability at every Canadian-facing casino.

Canadian eligibility and CAD banking
Check the authority and requirements for your province or territory. The iGaming Ontario directory identifies participating regulated sites and states that players must be at least nineteen and physically in Ontario to play in that market. It identifies OLG.ca separately.
A Canadian page or familiar casino brand is not proof that every website using that name is authorised in your location. Check the exact domain and current account terms.
For a CAD account, confirm that roulette chips are also denominated in Canadian dollars. Read transaction and conversion fees, identity requirements and withdrawal methods. Our debit card, Visa and Mastercard guides explain the banking details to check.
Software roulette, live wheels and phone screens
Software roulette displays a digital wheel and betting interface. Live roulette combines a physical wheel with a video feed and electronic betting; some tables use automated wheels. The presentation alone does not establish the house edge.
Before playing on a small screen, check the selected chip, covered numbers, total stake and time remaining. A misplaced chip on a dividing line may create a different bet from the one intended. Avoid repeated taps when the connection is slow until you can see what has been accepted.
Our iPhone, Android, iPad and mobile guides cover device considerations. Use the game’s history to identify an interrupted round, its accepted bets and the settled result. Keep the round identifier when contacting support.
A free demo can teach controls and payout reading. Its results cannot show that a real-money session will be profitable. Faster rounds and multiple open tables can increase total wagering even when each individual chip is small.
Roulette and wagering requirements
Roulette may contribute only partly to a promotion or be excluded. Spin Casino’s published bonus terms list roulette at 8% contribution and state that promotion-specific or geographical terms can override the general schedule. The page displays a November 2023 update date, so check your current offer.
At an 8% contribution rate, C$100 wagered counts as C$8 of progress. A hypothetical C$1,000 requirement would need C$12,500 of eligible wagers at that rate. This is an arithmetic example, not a recommendation to wager that amount. Contribution is separate from game RTP.
Read maximum-bet limits, expiry, game exclusions and restrictions on opposing bets before accepting a bonus. Being allowed to open roulette does not establish that your bet pattern complies with a promotion. Our bonus guide explains the main conditions.
Streaks, betting systems and spending limits
With fair, independent spins, previous colours do not change the next spin’s probabilities. OLG PlaySmart’s strategy discussion explains why trends do not identify a guaranteed winning number. A history panel records outcomes; it does not make an absent number due.
A doubling system changes the stake, not the wheel. Starting at C$5 and losing six successive bets of C$5, C$10, C$20, C$40, C$80 and C$160 costs C$315. The next proposed bet is C$320, which may exceed your balance or the table limit.
Set an affordable spending cap and an end time. Count every active bet, take breaks and stop rather than trying to recover losses. Our responsible gambling page includes support and account-control information.

Online roulette FAQs
How many numbers are on a European roulette wheel?
A conventional European wheel has 37 pockets: numbers one to thirty-six and one zero. American double-zero roulette has 38 pockets.
Does zero win on an even bet?
No. Roulette’s even-money categories exclude zero. Special rules such as la partage may return part of an eligible stake, but zero is not a winning even result.
Does 35:1 include my original stake?
A conventional 35:1 payout means thirty-five units of profit for one unit staked, plus the winning stake back. A C$2 winner returns C$72 in total.
Is red or black a fifty-fifty bet?
No. Each colour covers eighteen pockets. Zero pockets mean the probability is below 50% on conventional single-, double- and triple-zero wheels.
Do outside bets always have a lower house edge?
No. With standard European payouts, red/black and a single-number bet have the same 2.70% edge despite different win frequencies. Special rules can change that comparison.
Does la partage apply to every French roulette bet?
No. It applies to eligible even-money bets when the stated rule is offered. It does not halve losses on straight-up numbers, dozens or columns.
Is every single-zero game’s RTP 97.30%?
No. Reduced payouts, multiplier features and special zero rules can change the return. Read the rules for both the game and the particular bet.
Can roulette clear a welcome bonus?
Only if the specific offer allows it. Contribution can be reduced, some games can be excluded, and maximum-bet or opposing-bet restrictions may apply.
Can I play live roulette on a phone?
Availability depends on the operator, game, location and device. Check whether the betting layout, countdown and accepted stakes remain clear on your screen.
Can Martingale guarantee a profit?
No. Doubling after losses can quickly require a stake beyond your budget or the table maximum. It does not remove zero pockets or the house edge.
