Online Blackjack in Canada: Rules, Strategy and Live Play
Online blackjack puts your hand against the dealer’s. You can win with less than 21, and reaching 21 does not always mean you have a blackjack. The decisions, payouts and table rules matter more than the name or appearance of the game.
This guide explains the main rules, the difference between 3:2 and 6:5 payouts, and how to choose the right basic-strategy reference. For Canadian players, it also covers CAD account checks, live tables, mobile controls and bonus conditions. Learn the format before deciding whether to play for money.
Blackjack rules and card values
As OLG PlaySmart explains, the aim is to beat the dealer without going over 21. Number cards count at face value, picture cards count as ten, and an ace counts as one or eleven. Suits do not affect the main hand total.
A natural blackjack is an ace and a ten-value card in your initial two-card hand. A three-card 21 is an ordinary total of 21. An ace and ten received after a split usually also count as ordinary 21, so check the specific rules.
If you bust, your main wager loses even if the dealer later busts. Otherwise, the higher total wins, or equal ordinary totals push and return the stake. Two natural blackjacks normally push; a dealer blackjack beats an ordinary 21.
Soft and hard hands
A hand is soft while an ace can count as eleven without busting. Ace-six is soft 17. Add a ten and the ace must count as one, giving hard 17. A hard hand can therefore contain an ace: the distinction is how it is valued, not whether it is present.
Compare that with our baccarat guide, where aces and picture cards have different values and drawing follows fixed rules. Learning one card game does not automatically teach the other.
Hit, stand, double, split or surrender
The main decisions described in MGM’s GameSense guide are:
- Hit: take another card.
- Stand: finish drawing for that hand.
- Double: normally add an equal wager, receive one more card and stop.
- Split: separate an eligible pair into two hands with another equal wager.
- Surrender: where available, end the hand and forfeit half the initial stake. Timing and eligibility depend on the rules.
These options are not available in every situation. A table may restrict doubling, resplitting or drawing after split aces. Late surrender is considered after the dealer has checked for blackjack; it cannot rescue a hand already lost to a dealer natural.
Leave room for an additional stake
A C$10 opening bet becomes C$20 committed if you double. Splitting a C$10 pair also commits C$20 across two hands; doubling both split hands, if allowed, brings that total to C$40. These are stake examples, not recommended spending amounts.
Choose an opening amount with those possible decisions in mind. If an extra wager would exceed your planned limit, do not add funds to force a strategy decision. Practise the controls in a free version first, and stop if you cannot clearly see the total committed.
Why 3:2 and 6:5 blackjack payouts matter
The posted blackjack payout applies to a qualifying natural, not every winning hand. An ordinary win generally pays 1:1. The following examples show profit and total returned separately, assuming a C$20 stake and a winning result.
| Result | Net profit | Total returned |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary win, 1:1 | C$20 | C$40 |
| Blackjack, 3:2 | C$30 | C$50 |
| Blackjack, 6:5 | C$24 | C$44 |
The 6:5 version pays C$6 less on that winning natural. In the Wizard of Odds rule comparison, changing blackjack from 3:2 to 6:5 increases the house edge by about 1.39 percentage points under its reference rules. That is an increase in the edge, not the game’s complete house-edge figure.
There is no single house edge for all blackjack
OLG PlaySmart’s odds guide explains how correct basic strategy can reduce the casino’s advantage. The result depends on the rules and your decisions. Do not apply a headline percentage to a different game, or assume it includes optional side bets.
For a purely illustrative game with a 0.5% house edge measured against initial wagers, C$1,000 in initial bets corresponds to C$5 of theoretical expected loss. That is an average over extensive play, not a loss limit or prediction. A short session can lose much more, including the available balance.
When comparing published figures, check whether they use initial wagers or all money placed, including doubles and splits. Keep the calculation basis consistent. A favourable percentage also does not compensate for a stake or pace beyond your budget.
Using a blackjack basic-strategy chart
Basic strategy selects the mathematically preferred decision for your hand and the dealer’s exposed card under a stated set of rules. Use a chart matching the deck count, soft-17 rule, doubling and surrender options. It cannot tell you the next card or guarantee a winning hand.
These examples follow the Wizard of Odds four-to-eight-deck strategy for a conventional game with the dealer standing on soft 17, a dealer blackjack check, doubling after splitting and late surrender:
- Hard 12 against dealer 3: hit.
- Ace-seven against dealer 9: hit.
- Hard 11 against dealer 6: double when allowed.
- Ten-six against dealer 10: surrender when available.
- Eight-eight against dealer 10: split.
These are examples, not a complete chart. If a move is unavailable, consult the chart’s fallback. Do not apply these decisions unchanged to a no-hole-card game or a special variant.
Record the rules before comparing tables
- Blackjack payout: find the actual ratio, not just the table’s name.
- Dealer soft 17: “S17” means stand; “H17” means hit.
- Double and split restrictions: note eligible totals, hand limits and split-ace rules.
- Dealer blackjack: check when it is tested and whether additional stakes can be lost.
- Special settlements: look for altered payouts, fees or unusual push rules.
Taking a minute to record those details makes comparisons useful. “Classic”, “European”, “VIP” or a game-provider label does not supply a complete rule set. Our Microgaming guide gives background on software naming; the exact game’s help screen remains the place to check its rules.
Insurance and optional side bets
Insurance is a separate wager on the dealer having blackjack when an ace is exposed. It commonly costs up to half the main stake and pays 2:1 if successful. The name does not mean that every losing hand is covered.
Pairs, three-card combinations and jackpot wagers have separate paytables. Before adding one, check its qualifying cards, payout and stake. A basic-strategy chart for the main hand does not establish whether a side bet offers the same odds.
Keep the main wager and extras distinct in the interface. If you use a repeat-bet control, inspect what it repeats; an optional chip left on the layout can increase the amount committed each round. Clear unwanted selections before confirming the next wager.

Canadian eligibility and CAD banking
Confirm the exact website with the authority for your province or territory. The iGaming Ontario directory lists participating regulated sites and states that players must be at least 19 and physically in Ontario. OLG.ca is identified separately.
A familiar casino name or a Canadian flag does not establish eligibility for every province. Read the operator’s location restrictions and use accurate registration information. A payment method being accepted is not evidence that the website is authorised where you live.
For a CAD casino account, check that chips and table limits are also shown in Canadian dollars. Read deposit fees, conversion charges, verification requirements and withdrawal options before transferring money. Our debit card, Visa and Mastercard guides explain those banking checks.
Live blackjack, software games and mobile play
Software blackjack deals through an on-screen game; live blackjack streams a dealer while you make decisions through the interface. Choose by the published rules and usable controls. A video feed, table theme or faster dealing pace does not by itself establish better odds.
Before joining a live table, locate the betting countdown and decision timer. Check what happens if you do not respond and how a disconnection is handled. If a round becomes unclear, use its reference number and account history when contacting support instead of guessing whether a wager was accepted.
Check the screen before committing funds
On a phone, hit, stand and double should be easy to distinguish, with the current hand and total stake readable. Try a free demonstration where available. Confirm its rules match the intended table, and remember that practice results do not predict paid play.
Our iPhone, Android, iPad and mobile casino guides cover device checks. Start with one visible hand while learning the controls. Extra hands make it harder to follow decisions and increase the money committed in a round.
Can blackjack count towards a casino bonus?
Read the offer’s game-contribution rules. As one example, Spin Casino’s published bonus terms list 8% contribution for blackjack excluding Classic Blackjack, and 2% for Classic Blackjack. They also say that promotion-specific or geographic terms can override those percentages. The page carries a November 2023 update date, so confirm your current offer.
At 8% contribution, C$100 of eligible wagers reduces a wagering requirement by C$8; at 2%, it reduces it by C$2. These calculations explain the percentages, not an invitation to chase a target. Low contribution can make an apparently large bonus unsuitable for blackjack play.
Check maximum bets, expiry, cashout restrictions and treatment of doubles, splits and side bets. Our casino bonus guide explains the broader conditions. Resolve an unwanted bonus with support before wagering; do not assume switching games or using a cash balance removes every restriction.
Set limits before opening a table
Decide on a spending limit and an end time before starting. Include potential doubles, splits and every simultaneous hand when considering the amount at risk. Repeated small wagers still add up, especially when rounds move quickly.
Do not increase stakes to recover a loss or borrow to continue. Basic strategy concerns decisions within a hand; it does not make a betting progression a reliable source of income. Use breaks, account limits or self-exclusion if needed. Our responsible gambling page provides support information.
Online blackjack FAQs
Do I need 21 to win at blackjack?
No. A lower total can win if it beats the dealer without busting, or if the dealer busts after you remain in the hand.
Does every total of 21 pay the blackjack bonus?
No. The natural payout normally requires an ace and a ten-value card in the initial two-card hand. A multi-card 21 or a 21 after splitting is generally an ordinary hand.
Can a hard hand contain an ace?
Yes. Ace-six-ten is hard 17 because the ace must count as one. A soft hand has an ace that can still count as eleven without busting.
Is 3:2 better than 6:5?
For the same stake and winning natural, 3:2 pays more. A C$20 blackjack earns C$30 profit at 3:2 and C$24 at 6:5. Compare the other rules as well.
Does basic strategy guarantee a profit?
No. It helps choose decisions for a particular rule set, but cannot guarantee a hand or session result. The game’s rules, chance and your actual decisions still matter.
Can I always double after splitting?
No. That depends on the table. Split aces may have further restrictions. Check the help screen before choosing a strategy chart.
Is insurance protection for my whole hand?
No. It is a separate bet on a dealer blackjack, not general protection against losing. Read its cost and settlement conditions separately.
Do all blackjack games contribute equally to bonuses?
No. Contributions can differ by game and promotion, or a game can be excluded. Verify the exact title, maximum bet and treatment of extra wagers.
Can I play live blackjack on a phone?
Where the operator supports your device and location, mobile access may be available. Check readable controls, decision timers and connection stability before placing a wager.
What should I check before choosing a table?
Confirm eligibility, currency, limits, the natural payout, dealer soft-17 rule, doubling and splitting restrictions, and any bonus conditions. Use a strategy reference matching that exact format.
