Online Craps in Canada: Rules, Bets and Payouts
Craps uses two dice, but its different betting areas can make the screen look more complicated than the underlying game. Start by identifying the stage of play and the wager you are following. A seven can win one bet and lose another on the same roll.
This guide explains conventional online craps for Canadian players: the come-out roll, point, Pass Line, Don’t Pass, odds and common payouts. It also covers CAD accounts, mobile controls and bonus restrictions. Special variants can change these rules, so read the exact game’s help screen before placing a wager.
How a Pass Line bet works
The opening throw for a new Pass Line decision is the come-out roll. As described in OLG PlaySmart’s introduction, the point marker starts off and moves to a number once a point is established.
- Come-out 7 or 11: the Pass Line wins at 1:1.
- Come-out 2, 3 or 12: the Pass Line loses.
- Come-out 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10: that number becomes the point.
- With a point established: the Pass Line wins if the point repeats before a seven. A seven first loses the bet.
Other totals leave that established Pass Line wager waiting. After it is decided, the next Pass Line sequence begins with another come-out roll. A seven on the come-out is therefore different from a seven-out after a point has been set.
A worked round
Suppose a C$10 Pass Line bet starts with an eight. The point is now eight. Rolls of five and three do not settle this bet. An eight next wins C$10 profit, with C$20 returned including the stake; a seven instead loses the C$10. These amounts illustrate the rules, not a suggested budget.
Watch the point marker as well as the roll history. The latest total alone does not explain which bets won. If you are learning, follow one simulated Pass Line sequence before adding other betting areas.
Don’t Pass, Come and place bets
Don’t Pass is not an exact mirror of Pass
Under the usual bar-12 rule, Don’t Pass wins on a come-out two or three, loses on seven or eleven, and pushes on twelve. If a point is set, seven before the point wins. MGM’s GameSense guide confirms the come-out twelve is a push, not a win. Check which number is barred on your table.
Come and Don’t Come have their own starting roll
A Come bet is placed while the table already has a point. Its next roll acts like its own come-out: seven or eleven wins, two, three or twelve loses, and a point number moves the bet to that number. It then waits for that number before seven. Don’t Come follows the corresponding Don’t Pass pattern.
This means a fresh Come bet can win on a seven that loses an established Pass bet. Keep track of each chip’s position; the table’s point and an individual Come bet’s number may differ.
Place bets
A working place bet on four, five, six, eight, nine or ten wins if that number arrives before seven. Its payout depends on the number. Check whether a bet is working or switched off on a come-out roll, and whether a paid stake remains on the layout.
Buying a number, placing it and adding odds are different wagers. A similar position on the screen does not establish the same payout or commission. Open the help panel if the label is unclear rather than assuming two buttons mean the same thing.
Common craps payouts and house edge
This comparison uses conventional payouts, supported by OLG PlaySmart’s odds guide and the Wizard of Odds craps analysis. Payout ratios show net profit; the original stake is separate.
| Bet | Win payout | House edge |
|---|---|---|
| Pass / Come | 1:1 | 1.41% |
| Don’t Pass / Don’t Come, bar 12 | 1:1 | 1.36% |
| Place 6 or 8 | 7:6 | 1.52% |
| Place 5 or 9 | 7:5 | 4.00% |
| Place 4 or 10 | 9:5 | 6.67% |
| Any 7, next roll | 4:1 | 16.67% |
Line figures are per initial bet, including the Don’t bet’s come-out push. Place figures assume play until the number or seven settles the wager. These are not all per-roll percentages; a multi-roll bet can stay unresolved for several throws.
For example, a C$6 place bet on eight earns C$7 profit when it wins at 7:6. Confirm permitted stake increments and rounding, particularly if a digital table allows unusual chip amounts. Also check whether the displayed return includes a stake left working.
What the percentage does not promise
A 1.41% edge is not a cap on losses. For C$1,000 in accumulated initial Pass Line bets, the rounded figure corresponds to C$14.10 in theoretical expected loss over extensive play. Your session can finish very differently and can lose the available balance.
Read the exact paytable before using a comparison. A field bet’s payouts on two and twelve, a buy-bet commission or a special feature can change its mathematics. Our roulette and baccarat guides likewise distinguish the odds of different wagers within one game.
Taking odds behind a Pass or Come bet
After a number is established, a game may let you add an odds bet behind your Pass or Come stake. Standard taking-odds payouts match the probability of that number appearing before seven. They differ from the payouts for placing the same number.
| Number | Net payout | Profit on C$10 odds |
|---|---|---|
| 4 or 10 | 2:1 | C$20 |
| 5 or 9 | 3:2 | C$15 |
| 6 or 8 | 6:5 | C$12 |
For a C$10 Pass Line plus C$10 odds on point six, making six wins C$10 on the line and C$12 on the odds: C$22 profit, or C$42 including both stakes. Seven first loses the full C$20 committed.
Zero house edge on the odds portion does not mean a free or riskless bet. The required base wager retains its edge, and adding odds increases the money exposed. For the same base bet, it lowers the combined percentage by adding fairly paid action; it does not erase the base bet’s expected dollar loss.
Laying odds behind Don’t Pass or Don’t Come reverses the contest: seven must arrive first. The net payouts are 1:2 against four or ten, 2:3 against five or nine, and 5:6 against six or eight. You risk more than the potential profit.
Read the allowed multiple and whether it limits the amount staked or the amount that can be won. Do not treat the maximum as a target. Choose a total commitment that fits your existing limit before considering any extra wager.

Canadian eligibility and CAD accounts
Verify the exact website with the authority for your province or territory. The iGaming Ontario directory lists participating regulated sites and states that players must be 19 or older and physically in Ontario. It identifies OLG.ca separately.
A Canadian landing page, casino brand or payment logo does not establish permission to play everywhere. Read current location restrictions and use accurate registration details. Confirm both eligibility and the intended game’s availability before funding an account.
For a Canadian-dollar casino account, check that table chips are also in CAD. Review conversion charges, transaction fees, identity checks and withdrawal options. Our debit card, Visa and Mastercard guides explain the payment questions to resolve first.
Software craps, live tables and mobile controls
Software craps presents the dice and layout through a digital game. Where live craps is offered, a video feed accompanies the betting interface. Neither presentation tells you all the rules: inspect the paytable, timing, accepted bet types and handling of interrupted rounds.
Start by locating the point, selected chip value and total active stake. Find the controls for removing an eligible bet, switching it off and repeating a previous layout. Do not assume that closing the window cancels an accepted wager.
Follow each bet on a small screen
A phone can compress several betting areas into a small space. Use a free demonstration where available to check that labels remain readable and taps select the intended area. Practise locating moved Come bets and distinguishing winnings from stakes that remain on the table.
Our iPhone, Android, iPad and mobile casino guides cover device checks. If a stream or connection fails, consult the round record and transaction history before doing anything else. Keep the round identifier for a support enquiry.
A successful demo session does not predict paid results. It is useful for learning the interface and rules, including which bets are accepted at each stage. Stop if you cannot account for the money currently committed.
Craps and casino bonus restrictions
Read game exclusions before accepting a promotion. Spin Casino’s published bonus terms, for example, assign craps zero contribution and reserve the right to void winnings from excluded games before playthrough is completed. They say specific promotions or locations can have different conditions.
That page displays a November 2023 update date, so confirm the terms attached to your current offer. It is an example of why craps should not be assumed eligible, not a rule that applies to every casino.
At zero contribution, C$100 wagered produces no progress towards the requirement. Do not confuse being able to open a game with permission to use it during a bonus. Our casino bonus guide explains contribution, expiry and cashout restrictions. Resolve an unwanted bonus with support before wagering.
Dice probabilities, betting systems and limits
Two fair, independent six-sided dice have 36 equally likely ordered results. Six produce seven, while only one produces twelve. The chance of a seven on the next roll remains one in six; a long run without it does not make it due.
A betting progression changes the amounts at risk, not the dice probabilities. For example, doubling C$5 to C$10, C$20, C$40, C$80 and C$160 commits C$315 across six losing bets; the next proposed stake is C$320. A balance or table limit can stop the sequence before any recovery.
Set a spending limit and end time before opening the table. Add up every working wager, including odds and side bets, when checking your exposure. Take breaks and avoid borrowing or increasing stakes to recover losses. Our responsible gambling page includes account-control and support information.
If you prefer a different format, our blackjack guide explains player decisions in a card game, while sic bo covers a separate dice game with different bets. Similar-looking casino layouts do not imply identical rules.
Online craps FAQs
What is the come-out roll?
It starts a new Pass Line sequence. Seven or eleven wins that bet, two, three or twelve loses, and four, five, six, eight, nine or ten establishes a point.
Does a seven always lose in craps?
No. It wins Pass on the come-out but loses an established Pass wager before its point repeats. Other bets can have different outcomes on that same seven.
What happens to Don’t Pass on a twelve?
Under the usual bar-12 rule, a come-out twelve pushes. Check the table because some rules bar a different number. Once a point is set, twelve does not settle that Don’t Pass bet.
Is a Come bet tied to the table’s point?
It starts its own sequence on the next roll. If it moves to a number, that number can differ from the table’s point. Track the chip’s position separately.
Are odds bets risk-free?
No. Standard odds pay at true mathematical odds, but the entire added stake can lose. The base wager still has a house edge.
Is placing six the same as taking odds on six?
No. Standard place-six winnings pay 7:6; taking odds on an established six pays 6:5 and requires the relevant base bet. They are separate wagers.
Does a lower house edge guarantee a smaller loss?
No. It describes an average over extensive play under specified rules. Your stake, number of wagers and actual results determine what happens in a session.
Can craps clear a casino bonus?
Only if the exact promotion allows it and gives it a contribution. Craps can be excluded entirely. Check the terms before playing while a bonus is active.
Can I play craps on a phone?
It depends on the game, operator, device and your location. Check the current lobby and test whether the layout, point marker and active wagers are clear on your screen.
Does a streak change the next roll’s odds?
Not with fair, independent dice. Previous results do not make a total overdue. Raising a stake changes the possible loss, not the next roll’s probability.
